William Sydney Shuttleworth, 96, a securities investment broker, World War II
veteran, and longtime resident of Mount Lebanon, died July 6 in Mount Lebanon.
William Shuttleworth was born in 1920 in Montclair, New Jersey. He attended
Lehigh University from 1938 to early 1942, majoring in business administration, and
joined the Army shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. From 1942 to early 1946, he
served in the Army Artillery, advancing from Private to First Lieutenant. His unit crossed
the English Channel soon after D-Day and proceeded through France and eventually to
Germany. In 1951 the Army recalled him as a Captain during the Korean War.
Mr. Shuttleworth worked in insurance sales after 1945, and in 1955 he became a
securities investment broker in Pittsburgh, a career he continued with several securities
firms for almost 50 years. In 2003, at age 82, he retired from Arthurs, Lestrange &
Company as a Senior Vice President.
William Shuttleworth and his wife, Henrietta Wireman Shuttleworth, were married
for 74 years. He is survived by his wife and their three children –– Steven A.
Shuttleworth of Pittsburgh, Susan (Robert) S. Leggett of Seabrook Island, South Carolina, and
Sharon S. Galm of Arlington, Virginia.
